Dr. Hoffman

As a psychotherapist, I am a generalist.  That is, I do not specialize in treating a particular population or type of problem.  I work with a variety of people who present with many different types of issues.

My approach to individual therapy is psychodynamic.  Talking to a therapist in a warm and respectful environment helps you to understand your feelings and your inner life by examining how you think.  It also helps you to understand the lens through which you view the world.

By practicing self-reflection and learning to accept uncomfortable feelings, you can begin to anticipate your response to difficult situations and replace self-defeating habits with healthy coping skills.

Although you may feel stuck in your old patterns, therapy can lead to lasting change that enhances your capacity for intimacy – both with yourself and others – and deepen your engagement with life.

Therapy can be short term.  Studies show that 50% of people in therapy notice an improvement in their emotional functioning after just eight sessions.  And 75% felt that their lives had improved after six months in therapy.

I am trained as a neuropsychologist so I am also interested brain-based psychotherapy. That is, I am fascinated by the way a person's brain develops in respect to the environment in which they are raised and the many ways the brain can change in therapy.

As Nobel laureate Dr. Eric Kandel says, "(Psychotherapy) is a biological treatment. When you and I have a conversation, it changes our brains. It's a biological interaction."  He also believes the value of psychotherapy is in "the consistent, the supportive, and the healthy relationship the individual provides."

Research shows that the most important factor in successful psychotherapy is the relationship between the client and the therapist.  To see if we might work well together, please call me for a brief phone consultation at 415.339.8616.
